PhD within optimization of lean production systems

There is a temporary position available at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management as PhD Candidate in industrial economics and technology management for a period of 3 years. The position is resident at NTNUs campus in Trondheim. This is an educational position, which will provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD degree. The position is connected to the PhD program at the Faculty of Economics and Management and the faculty will be your employer.

About the position

The position is part of the research project "The lean-digitalization paradox: Toward strategic digitalization", funded by the Norwegian Research Council and five industrial partners. The project's mandate is to develop theoretical contributions and managerial guidelines for digitalization of Norwegian production industry based on lean management principles.

The PhD Candidate will belong to the section on Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management.

The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management aims to contribute with valuable research on an international level. The department will facilitate international activities as exchange and collaboration with other universities internationally and participation at international conferences.

Main duties and responsibilities 

This PhD project aims at developing models and methods for decision support and decision making in next-generation lean production systems. Of particular interest is the usage of real-time data from the production system for controlling production. The project covers both single production lines and entire production networks. The analysis focuses on the consequences (internal and external) changes and adjustments in the production process have on the production system. The overall goal of the models and methods is to improve the efficiency of the production system without violating lean principles. The methodology is expected to be based on machine learning, robust optimization and/or risk-averse optimization.

Both theoretical development and applied analysis are part of the PhD project. Models are to be validated for use with real-world problems. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with the industry partners in the lean-digitalization project.
